Notes: Carl Zewy (born April 21, 1855 in Vienna ; died June 20, 1929 there) was an Austrian genre painter. Zewy studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under August Eisenmenger and at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich , but was not enrolled there. After completing his studies, Zewy returned to Vienna and dealt with genre painting. He also illustrated books. He was friends with the painters Isidor Kaufmann , Josef Gisela and Johann Hamza. Zewy’s circle of friends also included the illustrator and caricaturist Karl Elleder and the film director Fritz Lang. Zewy received many orders from the Viennese art dealer Friedrich Schwarz. Zewy exhibited regularly at the exhibitions of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Many of his paintings appeared in the “Gartenlaube” and on postcards. On April 24, 1925, Zewy was awarded the title “Citizen of the City of Vienna”. (Wikipedia)
